I chose my topic for National History Day because I genuinely enjoy learning about the Holocaust, and what was happening around the area during the time. I originally researched Sophie Scholl but I soon realized that I could not create a legitimate website with only information about Sophie. So I tried branch out and I research the entire White Rose group. It fascinates me how much effort, and courage people put into resistance groups. Specifically with the White Rose group, how much manpower it took to write the detailed, and meticulously thought out leaflets the White Rose created. Even knowing that they probably would not make a difference, still making an effort to change things.
I researched my topic starting out with lili.org. I started to branch to different sources that I thought were legitimate enough to use. Soon after I found a few usable sources, I began to look for books. I picked up a few books from the boise public library, then started on making my website. I used these sources to answer 5 different questions such as who they were, what they did, what were their influences, how did they influence things at the time, and how they took a stand.
I chose my presentation category as a website, because I’ve always enjoyed technology so I naturally wanted to create a website for my topic. Another reason I thought I would like making a website is because I know that if I wasn’t creating a product I enjoyed then I wouldn’t care about the information I was putting into it.
I created my project using the website creator Weebly. starting off with the home page. I put the required information on and pasted my thesis onto it. I then added a section where you could click on the face of a White Rose member on be greeted by a page with information on that specific person. I then created a page with the six leaflets in order. Finally, I went back and added citations for sources on my information, and for pictures. While doing this I added links to the leaflet page whenever I referenced one of the leaflets in my website. For any background pictures I just looked up pixel art pictures -because they look nice- and blurred them for the background. After completing the second draft of my website, I started creating my annotated bibliography. While creating the annotations, I analyzed the origin, purpose, value, and finally the limitations of each source.
My topic, The White Rose, relates to the National History Day topic because this group took a stand against Hitler and the Nazis ideals. The White Rose group took this stand by spreading 6 leaflets across all of Germany. They made efforts for people to copy and distribute the leaflets to everyone they knew. They were sadly executed in 1943 after being caught dropping leaflets onto a large crowd of people.
